Bulldogs Fall in OT in the 1st Annual Joe Donnelly Cup

Wednesday afternoon was a special one not only for the bulldogs who were set to take on the Needham Rockets but also for the revealing of an annual tournament in honor of Joe Donnelly.

Donnelly was known as “the voice of bulldog hockey” and for the program and the Ice House to give back to the man who gave so much to them was really a great moment to see.

As for the game the Bulldogs and Rockets played an electric 45 minutes of hockey.

-Shots flying at the goalie!

-Bodies being tossed like rag dolls!

-Sensational diving saves!

And a total of zero goals.

So the game went to OT.

The bulldogs (much like the entire game) seemed to be controlling play with several opportunities to score. However the play of Needham’s goaltender Dylan Jones (only the second time I took precious minutes out of my day to look up the name of an opposing player) was stellar, making several saves in which I had already begun the first line of the bruins goal song sang by Bruins Guy

And just as it seemed a shootout would be necessary to decide things, a Needham forward poked the puck away for a breakaway chance in which he snuck it past senior Goaltender Quinn Gibbs (who also played extremely well for the bulldogs in net).

The loss for the bulldogs is officially recorded as a tie for the MIAA standings dropping the boys to 1-1-3 (win-loss-tie) on the young season and they will look to bounce back against Oliver Ames on the third of the new year, 5:00pm at the Ice House.

Real tough one for the Dogs last night.

After a little bit of a slow start it felt to me like the boys really controlled the pace of play the entire night but you also got the feeling after a lot of missed chances that Needham could get that fluke goal.

The low scoring affair might have lulled some fans but there was still plenty of support from the dog pound faithful for the Wednesday matinee, definitely worthy of a couple awards..

Science Fact of the Game: “Newton’s third law was made by Newton”

Always good to see that academic rigor paying off and hey… he ain’t wrong!

QOTD: If you win chuck-a-puck do you donate the money back?

Absolute blasphemy that this question has more than answer to it. If I win the greatest athletic feat known to mankind in placing a puck on a little tiny circle in the center of the rink…I am supposed to give my earnings back? Preposterous! (Give me your takes on the matter!)

Definitely a bitter loss for the dogs but excited to see what is in store for the new year.

NNNN
